If you're like me and have been singing along to Chappell Roan's viral hit The Subway, you've probably caught the line about "moving to Saskatchewan." And while it might feel like just a catchy lyric, it's got people curious: what's it really like out here on the Prairies?

The answer? Start with Saskatoon.

Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's largest city, and it's where culture, community, and prairie beauty come together in a way that surprises and delights first-time visitors. Whether you're here for a weekend getaway, a family trip, or (like Chappell) you're scoping out a potential new home, Saskatoon is the perfect place to get a taste of everything Saskatchewan has to offer.

The South Saskatchewan River

The South Saskatchewan River isn't just a view; it's Saskatoon's heartbeat. The city was built around its winding flow, and today it offers endless ways to enjoy it.  Stroll, cycle, or rollerblade along the Meewasin Valley Trails, which run over +105km on both sides of the river and soak in the best views of the skyline.  Or if you want to be on the water, rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard and take to the water for a new perspective of the city.

Whether you're snapping photos from one of Saskatoon's many Insta-worthy bridges or watching the sun dip below the horizon, life on the river is one of the city's greatest joys.

Honouring the First People of the Land

Saskatoon is located on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. Indigenous culture, history, and traditions are deeply woven into the identity of this place, and visitors have many opportunities to connect with that living legacy.

Just minutes from downtown, Wanuskewin Heritage Park offers an unforgettable experience where thousands of years of history come alive. Walk ancient trails, discover archaeological sites older than the pyramids, and take in art, dance, and storytelling that continue to shape the community today. Wanuskewin is also on the path to becoming Saskatchewan's first UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its considerable global significance.

Throughout the year, Saskatoon is also home to powwows, round dances, and cultural celebrations that welcome everyone to learn, listen, and participate in traditions. Take a 20-minute drive outside of Saskatoon to Dakota Dunes Resort. Located at Whitecap Dakota First Nation, this resort offers you a one-of-a-kind stay immersed in culture!  Or, you can also visit one of our city's local Indigenous shops to take back locally made art, jewelry, or more!

Let's be honest: Saskatchewan sunsets are a vibe of their own. There's nothing like watching the sky explode with colour over the river or catching the northern lights dance above the horizon. These are the kinds of moments that stick with you long after you've left.
