Solo-Travelling in Saskatoon

Arts & Culture, Entertainment, Food & Drink, Indigenous Lens, Outdoors & Adventure

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to the area or a local looking to see your hometown from a fresh perspective, Saskatoon is an amazing city to explore solo. I’ve taken solo-trips to seven countries, and these tips are my favourite ways to tackle a new city on my own.

Immerse Yourself in a Neighbourhood

Though Saskatoon is smaller than some typical travel destinations, a sure-fire tactic for exploring any new city is to pick a neighbourhood to spend the day in. This is one of the best ways to find local gems and get to know the distinct features of different parts of the city. Find a place to park and spend the rest of the day on foot if you can!

My Recommendations for Saskatoon First-Timers:
●    Start your day at Five Corners Cafe on the North end of Broadway Avenue with a coffee and a scone, and make your way down the street throughout the day.
●    Find locally made products all around the block, from gifts to homemade treats.
●    Eat a delicious meal at one of the neighbourhood’s many restaurants — such as local favourite Calories.
●    Finish your evening by seeing a movie at the Broadway Theatre or trying some local brews at Prairie Sun Brewery.

Take in Local Talent

One of Saskatoon’s biggest strengths is its people, so what better way to take it in than to see local performers at work? See a comedy show at Art Bar, take in an Open Mic at Winston’s English Pub, or check out what’s on at Persephone Theatre this season. Be sure to browse the Discover Saskatoon Calendar of Events as well as specific venue websites to find upcoming events!

Enjoying local arts and culture is an amazing activity to do alone; the social element is between you as an audience member and the artist you’re watching. Come out of your comfort zone, you may even make some new friends!

Don’t Be Afraid To Eat Out Alone

Asking for a table for one can feel daunting, but exploring the food scene in a city is one of the best ways to learn about it. It can be really freeing to enjoy a meal with yourself; think of it as a solo-date! Remember: never let running solo prevent you from making the most of your trip.

Solo-Dining Spots To Try:
● Living Sky Cafe: If you’re like me and use every solo trip as an excuse to eat more brunch, Living Sky Cafe is your next stop.
● Keo’s Kitchen: A sit-down restaurant with great food and a laidback atmosphere, Keo’s has some of the best Thai food in the city.
● Chacos Tacos: For those who prefer to take their food to-go, stop by Chacos Tacos for a taste of Mexican street food up North.
● Baba’s Homestyle Perogies: If you’re looking for a meal that is quintessential Saskatoon fare, look no further than a pile of perogies and sausage. Plus, you can go through the famous drive-thru!

Explore Local Nature

Would a trip to Saskatoon be complete without a visit to the Meewasin Trail? Immersing yourself in the natural flora and fauna will show you a different side of travel destinations, and the South Saskatchewan River is an essential part of Saskatoon’s identity.

Enjoy the last few weeks of warm weather and do one of the river trail loops to take in the natural focal point of the city. I recommend starting at the CPR Bridge at 33rd and Spadina for a view of the river, and following the trail up to the University Bridge and coming back on the other side. If you make your way further up along the river, you can explore the beautiful Wanuskewin or Cranberry Flats Conservation Area for a change of pace from the city views.

Spending time outside can only be improved by being alone; you can be fully present and take in your surroundings without distraction!
