The Holiday Magic of Giving Moments, Not Things

Entertainment, Outdoors & Adventure, Wellness

The holidays are filled with magic, from decorating gingerbread houses with your kids and plotting your elf-on-the-shelf’s next move to soaking in Saskatoon’s winter favourites like the Festival of Trees or the BHP Enchanted Forest. When I think back on my own favourite holiday moments, they’re almost always about the experiences I shared with the people I love, not the gifts wrapped under the tree.

That’s why this season I’m leaning into the idea of giving experiences instead of things. Not only it a more sustainable and eco-conscious approach, Saskatoon shines with year-round activities that makes it easy to find the perfect gift, no matter the recipient. Whether they need a little self-care, a cozy paint night, or even an ATV adventure, there truly is an experience for everyone on your list.

Back2Nature Wellness and adventure

Back2Nature Wellness & Adventure is the ultimate self-care escape, offering immersive retreats that help you slow down and reconnect with both yourself and the outdoors. I recently joined their Nervous System Reset Retreat, and it was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. We began with a grounding meditation before heading into the sauna, complete with fun animal and nature-themed sauna caps (I proudly chose the seal). It was a cozy moment to connect, breathe, and unwind. Then came the cold plunge. We made our way to the lake, and yes, the water was very cold. But after a quick dip and a warm-up by the fire, I found myself easing into the rhythm: sauna, cold plunge, rest.

I arrived with a buzzing mind and a bit of nerves, but by the end of our third round, the sun was setting over Blackstrap Lake and everything felt calm and clear. On the drive home, my nervous system felt reset, and I truly felt ready for winter. Back2Nature offers year-round outdoor experiences, from sauna and cold plunges to dog sledding and stand-up paddleboard adventures. Whether you're looking for a reset, a thrill, or a meaningful moment to gift someone you love, there’s something for everyone. It’s the kind of gift that doesn’t just brighten the season, it fills your cup.

Wanuskewin

Wanuskewin is one of those places that stays with you long after you visit. It’s a living cultural site where you can feel the deep history of the land and the stories that have shaped this region for thousands of years. Dakota Dunes Resort is the perfect spot for an unforgettable Saskatchewan getaway. They offer authentic Indigenous experiences year-round, from the brand-new Cosmic Dome, an immersive blend of night-sky wonder and rich Indigenous storytelling, to canoeing along the South Saskatchewan River, learning traditional Indigenous games played on the northern plains, and even setting up a tipi.

Meewasin Valley

The Meewasin Valley is one of Saskatoon’s most treasured gems, a protected stretch of riverbank along the South Saskatchewan River that highlights some of the city’s most stunning scenery, trails, and natural spaces. Meewasin offers guided walks, conservation programs, and seasonal events, but sometimes the best way to experience the beauty of the valley is simply to explore at your own pace.

They also host incredible special experiences throughout the year, like their playful Naughty by Nature adults-only nights, intimate Grazing Dinners featuring local food, and magical Dark Sky events that make you fall in love with the valley all over again.

Local businesses like The Local Adventure Co., Life Outside Gear Exchange, and Explore Sports make that easy, offering bike and e-bike rentals, paddleboards, kayaks, and kickboards, cross country skis, and snowshoes in winter . It’s a perfect way to gift someone a little adventure — and a fresh perspective on Saskatoon’s natural landscape.

Wheatland Express

Wheatland Express is such a fun way to gift a little adventure, especially for families and kids. Their themed train experiences bring stories to life, from magical holiday rides to interactive family adventures, all while taking in the beauty of the prairies from a cozy railcar.

It’s one of those experiences that feels special from the moment you climb aboard, and the memories tend to stick around long after the train pulls back into the station.

And if you do find yourself wrapping up a physical gift this season, consider adding a little local love to it. Our new online store is live and filled with #Saskatooning merch that lets you rep the city you love, or gift it to someone who loves exploring it just as much.

Whether you’re giving an experience, a keepsake, or a mix of both, choosing something local makes the holidays feel that much more meaningful.
