A Sustainable Day in Saskatoon
Walk, bike, sip, shop, and support local—all in one eco-friendly day.
If I had a free day in Saskatoon and wanted to spend it as sustainably as possible, I’d start by slowing down and paying attention to the choices I make—from how I get around to where I eat and shop. Saskatoon might not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of sustainability, but don’t count us out—we’re full of local businesses and grassroots projects making a real difference.
Start with Reusables & Road Coffee
Every sustainable day starts at home: I grab my reusable water bottle, coffee mug, and a container for leftovers. I usually fill my mug with Road Coffee, a local roaster that supports sustainable farming practices, invests in coffee producers around the world and empowers women in the coffee supply chain.

Ride the River (and Rent an E-Bike!)
Our beautiful Meewasin Valley offers scenic river trails, perfect for walking or biking. For a fun, low-impact way to explore, rent an e-bike from Life Outside Gear Exchange. Life Outside specializes in selling second hand outdoor gear and clothing, making getting outside affordable, accessible and sustainable for all. And now they offer rentals for e-bikes, kayaks, and more. The city’s bridges make starting and ending in the same spot easy, you just have to decide how far you’d like to go!

Shop (and Eat!) Local
A stroll through Broadway means supporting local while finding sustainable gems. For lunch, I’d stop at Odla, a farm-to-table restaurant that sources from 50+ local producers. They avoid single-use plastics, compost their waste, and even do their own canning and fermenting—plus, the food is always delicious.

Next up: secondhand shopping. My favourite is Seven Sundays, a stylish vintage shop known for its hand-curated clothing and famous hats. They even offer custom-tailored secondhand jeans. Visit on a “Secondhand Sunday” and you might catch a closet sale—and a cuddle from their two Bernese Mountain Dogs.

The Refillery: Low-Waste Living Made Easy
No sustainable day is complete without a visit to The Refillery downtown. From personal care to home cleaning, their refillable, non-toxic products make low-waste living feel modern and luxurious (something sustainability is sometimes missing). You can bring your own containers or pick from their beautiful selection. Their containers will make you want to refill again and again!

Dinner at Primal, Drinks at Pop
To end your evening, Primal and POP Wine Bar are a must. This sister restaurant and bar take sustainability seriously— using the entire animal and vegetable (think carrot tops and beet leaves), composting food scraps, and growing heirloom produce in their own permaculture garden. Even the décor, table settings and equipment is sourced second hand before buying new.

Bonus Stop: Reroute
Though not a physical destination, Reroute is a small local business worth shouting out. They offer hassle-free pickups for recycling, hazardous waste, Sarcan returns, yard waste, and donations—diverting over 60,000 lbs of waste from the landfill in just one year. They redistribute donations directly to individuals and organizations in need, redefining what waste can mean in a community.

Final Thoughts
Pick a day, grab your bike or walking shoes, and head out for your own sustainable adventure in Saskatoon. The businesses and places I’ve mentioned are just the beginning—once you start looking, you’ll see just how many people are working toward a greener city.
Let’s support them—and the planet—one day at a time.
