Must-Try Sandwiches in Saskatoon
Keep reading to find out six of my favourite sandwiches in Saskatoon!
1. Park Cafe - The Death by Cheese
The Park Cafe is always my number 1 recommendation for anyone visiting Saskatoon. Excellent breakfast, excellent burgers, and the atmosphere of old school Saskatoon at its absolute finest. As far as sandwiches are concerned, they also have the local sandwich that is closest to my heart. Which is to say, I’m sure some of this sandwich is still lodged in my arteries somewhere. I’m talking of course about The Death by Cheese! Thick Texas toast piled high with sharp cheddar and swiss, battered and deep fried. You can add house made bacon if you like ( I normally do), and they appreciate it if you get the onion rings instead of a salad as a side. The best part is when the server pops by to check on you they ask “How’s your death?”

2. Hearth - Grilled Cheese
As one of Canada’s Top 100 restaurants, you’d better believe Hearth knows how to make a great sandwich. Sitting in the Remai Modern, overlooking the river, you can comfortably enjoy what is probably the best looking sandwich in the city. With cheese encrusted pickle slices grilled right on top of pastry like brioche bread and filled with an oozing a blend of sharp and creamy cheeses - this is the perfect lunch warm up on a cool day. Enjoy it with a house-made root beer.

3. Franky’s - Special Combination Banh Mi
I go to Franky’s for lunch so often that it is guaranteed my google maps most visited location besides my home and work. Franky’s recently moved from their little storefront on 21st st , just around the corner on 2nd ave to a new location with seating, and are now also serving incredible pho and noodle bowls. Though the location has changed, people still line up out the door most days for their banh mi.
Everyone has their favourite, but I will forever be in love with the special combination (The #1 for the old school Franky’s patrons). Their banh mi are served in huge, beautiful Vietnamese baguettes with a perfect crispy on the outside, soft on the inside texture. The special combo is pate, char siu, two types of Vietnamese ham, pickled carrots, cucumbers, jalapenos, cilantro and peanuts. Combo with a pop for only $13. Phenomenal.

4. Botte Chai Cafe - Beef and Potato Kotlet Wrap
Botte Persian Cafe might be one of the most pleasant, tucked away places in the city. With delicious persian coffee, beautiful unique tea blends, and excellent food. My favourite is the Beef and Potato Kotlet Wrap. The hearty beef and potato are balanced by bright pink pickled cabbage and pickles make for an incredibly satisfying bite.

5. Pique Café - Beef au Poivre
I recently declared that this sandwich might be my new favourite in the city. It’s so good, it's difficult to find the words to describe it. The pastries, coffees, and sandwiches produced at Pique Café are so good, one might say they are single handedly earning the whole “Paris” part of Saskatoon;s ”Paris of the Prairies” moniker. I don’t want to risk overselling this, but the word “transcendent” comes to mind. The beef is so soft and tender, the au poivre sauce, the fried shallots, the microgreens, the house made baguette… you just really need to try it.

6. Living Sky Cafe - The Drunken Pig
Living Sky Cafe just feels like all the best parts Saskatoon put together neatly in a cafe. It’s coy comfortable vibe, full of great ideas, friendly people, and excellent food. The Drunken Pig is my go to Sandwich. Really any sandwich with brie will always draw me like a moth to a flame, but this sandwich is extra special. The house made ciabatta is so soft, the cooked pear is just a little bit sweet, and the smoky bacon, the rich brie, the caramelized onions… this is just such a nice sandwich.

There you have it. These are only a few of the dozens of incredible sandwiches around the city, and by no means is this a complete list. There are so many other notable burgers, reubens, donairs, and many, many incarnations of Saskatchewan’s signature sandwich, the Frajolaki, all around Saskatoon. If you have a favourite Saskatoon sandwich, be sure to spread the word and hopefully one day soon, Saskatoon will get the recognition it deserves as the number 1 sandwich destination of the prairies!
