Indigenous Beading Workshop with Vanessa Hyggen

Event June 21st, 2025
Time 1pm - 5pm

Join master beader Vanessa Hyggen in this hands-on workshop where you’ll create a beautiful beaded card holder using the flat stitch two-needle method. You’ll learn the fundamentals of bead embroidery—a versatile technique for adding beads to a variety of projects. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind card holder that reflects your personal style, along with the skills to continue exploring beadwork on your own.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced beaders, and is recommended for ages 15 and up.

Vanessa Hyggen is a Canadian artist of Woodlands Cree and Norwegian ancestry. She is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, and her home community is nemepith sipihk (Sucker River). Her work draws on memory, tradition, and themes of nature. Land conservation and sovereignty are central to her practice, with both her painting and beadwork highlighting the richness of the land—and the threats it faces.
