A lively urban centre on the doorstep of wide-open spaces and awe-inspiring natural wonder, Saskatoon is a true nature-lover’s dream.
Our city boasts more than 1,000 hectares of lush parkland just waiting to be explored, along with a picturesque network of trails winding along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. This one-day itinerary takes you on a journey through some of our city’s most memorable (and Instagrammable!) outdoor attractions, from River Landing to Valley Road and beyond.
Your day of adventure in the great outdoors begins in River Landing with a relaxing stroll along the Meewasin Trail. Stretching more than 100 kilometres along both sides of the South Saskatchewan River, the trail is one of the best places to enjoy the natural beauty and abundant sunshine of Saskatoon. Stroll until you reach the Delta Bessborough Hotel. Dubbed the “Castle on the River”, the nearly century-old Châteauesque landmark is your cue to stop for a bite to eat.
For a true local dining experience, head to the nearby Saskatoon Bus Stop Refreshments, housed inside an iconic, London-style double-decker bus. Their famous River Bank Frank and Italian soda make for the perfect on-the-go meal. Once you’ve refuelled, continue northeast along the trail to the Weir, where from April to October you can catch a glimpse of pelicans frolicking in the water.
Ready to take in the natural beauty of Saskatoon from a whole new vantage point? Head to Kinsmen Park on Spadina Crescent East and hop aboard the Prairie Lily for a relaxing river cruise. This hour-long guided tour of the South Saskatchewan River operates seasonally from May through to September, rain or shine.
Take in the tranquil beauty of the river from the cruise deck, spot iconic city landmarks, sip a refreshing drink from their on-board beverage service, and bask in the sunshine under the expansive prairie sky. Wildlife sightings are not uncommon, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars!
This much fresh air is practically guaranteed to work up an appetite. Thankfully, Saskatoon is home to an impressive food scene, with culinary creatives taking their inspiration from the natural bounty of the land.
For a unique farm-to-table dining experience, head south on scenic Valley Road to the Berry Barn. This charming riverfront restaurant offers fruit pies and hearty down-home eats in a serene, garden-like setting overlooking the beautiful South Saskatchewan. Their acclaimed menu offers everything from gluten-friendly options to kid-friendly fare, with a selection of made-from-scratch dessert options that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
