Probus Global 60th Anniversary Flag Raising Celebration

Celebrating a Legacy of Fellowship: 60 Years of PROBUS International and the Vibrant Community of Saskatoon
The year 2026 marks a historic milestone for PROBUS: exactly sixty years since the very first club was founded in 1966 by the Rotary Club of Caterham, England. What began as a simple idea to keep retired professionals connected has blossomed into a vital international fellowship. PROBUS is a global organization, with more than 4,000 clubs around the world. PROBUS Canada is a proud part of PROBUS Global, with more than 260 clubs and over 38,000 members across Canada.
At its core, PROBUS stands for three fundamental pillars: Fellowship, Friendship, and Fun. It provides a non-profit, non-political network where members stay socially engaged through fascinating guest speakers, lively business updates, and vibrant social hours.
Here in Saskatoon, that spirit is stronger than ever. The city is proudly represented by three distinct, flourishing clubs that gather regularly at the Nutana Royal Canadian Legion to foster lifelong learning and community connection:

Together, these three clubs bring nearly 380 Saskatoon residents into a welcoming, self-generating web of goodwill. Between their formal monthly meetings, members organically organize a vast array of interest groups—ranging from walking, golfing, and bowling to bridge, theater outings, book clubs, luncheons and wine tastings. Activities decided upon are unique to each club and their membership interests. Every Probus Club in Canada operates autonomously and is managed locally by its own elected executive and management committees to determine their own activities.
While PROBUS itself is strictly a social organization and does not engage in formal fundraising or service work, its members are recognized as a driving force of volunteerism across Saskatoon. Individually, PROBUS members carry their diverse backgrounds and energetic spirits into countless volunteer pursuits, making our city a better, more connected place to live. October 1, Probus Day we celebrate 60 years of international impact and the massive footprint of friendship these clubs have created right here at home.
A Convergence of Celebrations: Probus Month, National Seniors Day, Financial Security and International Day of Older Persons
This gathering takes on an even greater significance as it aligns with Probus Month throughout October, anchored by Probus Day on October 1st. This is significant as these dates honor retired and semi-retired individuals and highlights the positive social contributions older adults make to communities. Though Probus Clubs do not have a formally defined age requirement, membership is generally observed as people aged 55 and older.

Probus Clubs have found many wonderful ways to celebrate the friendships, fellowship and fun that make their Clubs special. Meetings and events take on the colours of blue and gold, and members have gathered in flag raising ceremonies such as this one, parks, and community spaces to mark important Probus milestones finding various ways to raise the spirit with the Probus colours as communities come together to celebrate.

The celebrations planned show that one special day was not enough to recognize everything Probus brings to the lives of its members. Since 2023, October has therefore been celebrated as Probus Month, giving Clubs an entire month to highlight their activities, friendships and contributions.

Probus Month is a time for members to celebrate what their Clubs mean to them while also introducing Probus to the wider community and helping others discover the opportunities for friendship, fellowship and fun that Probus provides.
Coincidentally, October 1st is also recognized globally as the United Nations International Day of Older Persons established on December 14, 1990 36 years ago —a dedicated global day recognizing the vast contributions of older people while examining the critical societal issues that affect aging. Across Canada, this date is proudly celebrated as National Seniors Day. This is a special occasion for all citizens to join together in celebrating older adults across Canada—whether a parent, a co-worker, a neighbour, or a friend. The Government of Canada stands proud to acknowledge the contributions older adults have made and continue to make to our families, workplaces, communities, and broader society.
This year is exceptionally monumental, as Canada celebrates the 15th anniversary of National Seniors Day. Remarkably, 2026 also marks the 60th anniversary of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). As a foundational cornerstone of Canada's retirement income system, the Canada Pension Plan has spent six decades ensuring financial security, dignity, and independence for generations of Canadian workers.
